Domain expired : The process towards domain expiration

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

At a certain point of time when it comes for your domain expiration date, the domain gets expired. To have your domain you need to renew it before the expiration date, the best practice is to renew the domain 15 days before, this is what I do. However the domain expiration processes have several levels. It is indeed important to know about the process about how does the domain expiration works. The actual domain expiration process passes through various stages from its active to available status.

If you own a domain and you intend to keep with you then its necessary to renew it on time before it get expired. You should activate the automatic domain renewal service in your registrar account if they have any such option available. But make sure to keep your contact information updated always. So your current domain registrar will send you a email notification at your contact asking you to get the domain renew when your domain is due to expire. So, it’s your responsibility to get it renew on time to avoid further loosing your domain.

Here are the typical stages how the domain expiration process works:

Active status :
This is a stage when you own the domain and it is in active status until it’s within your registration date. When your expirations date will come close your registrar will send you a notification mostly through email for getting the domain renewal before the due date.

On hold :
At this stage the domain passes through the expiration date if its not renewed. It is also called as “grace period” after the domain registration is expired or for a short time approximately 10 -15 days (depending upon the registrar decision). And your registrar will stop all the services bounded with the domain like emails, forwarding etc. Although the domain will stop working and your website will seem unavailable when you will type address in browser. When the domain is in this status still it is possible to renew and can be re-activated for standard registration fees.

Redemption period :
The end of grace period the domain normally enters in 30 day Redemption Period. At this stage still there is second chance to the registrant to get it renewed to avoid its complete loss but now for much expensive fee. Normally it can cost up to $100. Even some registrar will set the price much higher! depending on registrar to renew the domain when it is in redemption period.

Deletion/removal :
This is the last stage of process and there is no more chance to get domain renew even for a large fee. This status follows the 30 day redemption period and lasts up to 5 days. And it is not possible to renew or reactivate domain even at any cost. The domain will deleted from the registry and will be made available for the others to get it registered.

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Most people have found transferring of domain from one host to another host a painful experience. But the main thing they fear about is common to all that makes them concern about the downtime. Nobody will like to get their visitors while accessing their webpage’s pages “page not found error” for couples  of days while the move. So everybody wants to minimize their downtime as much possible. It’s a risky game to play with your visitor’s patience. If you follow the steps below you should be able to transition from one host to another without any downtime to your website.

Signing up new account:
Firstly choose a new hosting provider for yourself, then signup for hosting package and get your new account setup. Once the account is setup then follow the next steps.

Backup all your files from your old account:
Now go to your old hosting account and backup your account website files, databases and emails everything in your account and backup to your local hard drive. Remember that you cannot cancel this account yet even though you have backed up all your files.

Upload files in your new account:
Once you have backed up from old hosting account now its time to upload your website files to your new hosting account. Also create a new MySQL Database on the new host and import all the tables from your backup. While this process of uploading remembers that your site is still running from the old hosting account. It’s just like you are creating another copy of your site on new hosting account.

Create Your Mail Accounts:
Set up all new emails accounts in your new hosting account as all the same you had with your old hosting account. Once this done check you’re all email addresses on the new account should match the email address on your old account.

Checking files and links:
Now its time to check the all your files and links are working properly with the new host. You can check this by creating a temporary URL to the website. Your new webhost will provide you the ability to create temporary a URL so you can test your new site.

Change domain name servers:
After you have tested and sure that all the links and files and everything is working fine as expected. Now, it’s time to change your name servers for your domain. Your new host should have provided you with their DNS settings. If they have not, then contact them and ask them about the namservers details that has to be set for your domain. Usually the addresses will look like this, ns1.domainname.com, ns2.domainname.com. When they provide you the details then you should need contact your domain registrar whoever your domain is registered with. If you registered with the registrar, you will need to change the DNS server by login to their control panel. If it was registered with your old host then you need to login to their control panel and change the DNS name servers to the new one.

Wait For DNS Changes to Propagate:
After your DNS are updated to new name servers allow some to time to get the new DNS propagated over the network. This depends on the update schedule of individual ISP. Most frequent the ISP picks up the update and get your DNS propagated faster. Remember your site is working with your old hosting account. As soon as the ISP will picks the name server update. Then some of your visitors may find your site working from old hosting account and some will find from new hosting account. You can check through web stats for both of them.

Cancelling your old account:
Make sure you wait at least 48 hours for the domain name to propagate. After that make sure your domain is resolving to your new webhost and you are 100% sure that all things are working properly as it were before. You can cancel the data at your old hosting provider.

Now you will see your site running fine. And you have completed the transfer without it noticing your visitors about it.

Good domain names are easily memorable and easily typed. Generally this means keeping them short as longer domains are often harder to remember.

Hyphen:
It’s always best to avoid the hyphens in your domain name. I would agree with using hyphen in domain name has advantage for the search engine to distinguish the keywords and making your website more SEO friendly. But the disadvantage is that it is hard to remember hyphen when typing you may run the risk of sending your site’s visitors to your competitor’s websites.

Top level domain : Top level domain(TLD) portion is the tail of your domain name. It is important for knowing the difference between each top-level domain when choosing your domain name.

.com- domains are more commonly found in business/commercial use. There are lots of businesses which use this top level domain. Its mainly intended for commercial use.

.net – destined for Internet Service Providers.

.org – destined for non commercial website, but used by organizations for ex. NGO

.edu – generally use for educational institutes

.gov – Generally used for government agencies

.biz – This is a new TLD for businesses; ‘.biz’ is intended to be an alternative to the ‘.com’.

info – This is also new, and is freely available to anyone with a business

If you do not need to attract customers from outside your own country or you are offering something country specific then a geographic domain name is the best choice. i.e if  your target is only for specific country level and your business that is based in that country  then it wised to choose country specific top  level domains  i.e. .uk , .co.uk for the United Kingdom, .au for Australia, .ca for Canada, .de for Germany, .in for india, .cn for China, etc…

Consider Spelling Mistakes

Consider mistakes people will make when typing your web site address and how your domain name sounds.  A common mistake comes from double letters, so try to avoid those if possible. Some visitors may also try the singular form instead of plural. It’s best to avoid such problem by creating a list of every possible mistake you may find and register domain names which include these mistakes.
